Chennai formerly known as Madras is the capital of the state Tamil Nadu and is India’s fourth largest metropolitan city. Chennai is located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal, developed after 1639 when the British East India Company established a fort and trading post at the small fishing village of Chennai. Chennai is nearly a 350 year old city and it is also the 36th largest metropolitan area in the world. Chennai is also popularly known as the” Gateway to South India”.

Chennai is also known as the automobile capital of because nearly 40% of the automobile industries have a base there. Chennai is also referred to the Detroit of South Asia. Chennai has diversified economic support mainly through automobiles, software services, hardware manufacturing and financial services. The other important industries that support Chennai economically are petrochemicals, textiles and apparels. The city has a fully computerized stock exchange called the Madras Stock Exchange.
